Chromium: Another Miracle

Written By Nutriwonders

For all of the complaints that one can lodge against the United States’ health care system and the demands for more profits from the shareholders of drug companies, hospitals, HMO’s and others who drive that system; one must be grateful for the often forgotten medical researchers who make new discoveries, and the unknown entrepreneurs who fund new advances in the food supplement industry.

Many years ago, during the last century, there was very little discussion in the literature regarding chromium. The lack of it was known to cause glucose intolerance (prediabetic syndrome) in animals. Rats were shown to have poor growth in the presence of chromium deficiency. Glucose intolerance and growth deficiency were eliminated when chromium was added to the diet.

In 1985 two medical doctors discovered that it is chromium that is indeed the factor the lack of which causes glucose intolerance, or prediabetes in humans. This discovery was ignored for the most part by most of the medical profession. If a cure for diabetes lies in the mere supplementation of the diet with small amounts of chromium, then what will we do with all of this complicated science?

Well, interestingly enough, some hospitals are quietly training their diabetic patients to supplement their diets with chromium; because chromium facilitates the transport of insulin into the cells. This getting the glucose into the cells allows the cells to produce energy, thus eliminating the many devastating results of diabetes such as, blindness, gangrene, depression and the like.

More recently, some new facts have arisen. Diabetes and obesity have grown at about the same rate in the United States over the last ten years. This is because Americans eat so many foods that are high in refined carbohydrates. These sugars break down so rapidly, that the body’s insulin cannot keep pace. That situation is combined with the fact that the American diet is very low in chromium. The result has been disastrous to many, many Americans.

According to an article written by Jack Challem (one of the co-authors of the book Syndrome X) in Great Life Magazine, Malcolm N. McLeod, M.D., a psychiatrist at the University of Nor Carolina School of Medicine, recently fund that chromium can relieve depression in patients who do not have diabetes.

His discovery came after a 50 year-old patient who was taking anti-depressant medication also began supplementing with chromium. The chromium use led to a complete reversal of the fatigue, depression, and overeating.

Dr. McLeod united with another physician and asked several patients to take between 200 and 400 mcg daily. Within days, all improved dramatically. The doctors caution that it may not help everyone. It appears to work best with depressed patients who have cravings for sweets and carbohydrates, are chronically tired and tend to sleep excessively.

It helps Diabetics

According the to article, Dr. McLeod’s research fits neatly into existing research that shows chromium supplements easing many of the physical symptoms of diabetes.

A test was run by a researcher at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He gave 1,000 mcg of chromium to 180 people with adult-onset diabetes. Overall the subjects improved significantly. In a follow up study, 833 diabetic patients were given 500 mcg of chromium for one year. Over 805 of the subjects had substantial improvements in fasting and post-meal glucose levels, fatigue, thirst and excessive urination.

Good Health!
